The journey to build AquaPark began over four years ago
The idea to create a world-class aquatic facility in KwaZulu-Natal that would transform the future of swimming in South Africa. It was a dream born not of luxury, but of need: a need for access, excellence, and opportunity in the water.
At the time, there was no Olympic-standard 50-metre pool in Pietermaritzburg. Elite swimmers lacked high-performance training spaces. Children had limited opportunities to learn vital water safety. Communities were separated by access to coaching, to competition, and to hope.
BUILDING THE DREAM
From the early planning stages to securing land, partners, and architectural plans, every step of this journey has been guided by a clear mission: to make waves of change, one phase at a time. Construction of Phase One began with determination and grit. Backed by a strong vision to create South Africa’s most inclusive and innovative aquatic destination, the Xhawula team rallied support, including Olympian and Paralympic Head Coach Theo Verster and securing over R72 million toward the dream.
With Myrtha’s cutting-edge pool technology and a flexible design that allows seamless conversion between 50m and 25m training, AquaPark is designed to serve everyone, from competitive swimmers to families. This is a space where champions train, children take their first strokes, and wellness is woven into daily life.
Today, we are closer than ever to filling the pool, a symbol of possibility, perseverance, and purpose. With just R23 million needed to complete Phase One, we’re inviting the community, sponsors, and partners to join us in reaching this milestone.
Once filled, the pool will open a floodgate of opportunities: elite training for LA 2028 hopefuls, accessible Learn-to-Swim programmes for children, and a place for families to connect and thrive. And this is just the beginning – five phases are planned, each bringing us closer to our vision of a fully integrated aquatic hub.
